Around 1997, products such as ReBirth RB-338 (Propellerhead Software) appeared, which had a staggeringly accurate emulation of the ubiquitous Roland TB303. Today software synthesizers are taken very seriously. Dynamo V1.0 by Germanys Native Software is indeed one of the most serious music software products I have ever seen.

Dynamo V1.0 is a piece of software for both the Power Macintosh and the PC that turns your computer and soundcard into a powerful synthesizer and audio processing system. It is based on the more expensive Reaktor V2.3 which has a completely modular structure that enables you to create simple analogue synthesizers or complex modular systems which can feature sampling and different kinds of synthesis such as FM, made popular in 80s by Yamahas DX7 and more exotic methods such as delay-line resonance and granular synthesis (a.k.a. re-synthesis).

With Dynamo V1.0 you cannot modify the instruments or build your own, instead you have access to the growing NI Premium Library, which is supplied on the installation CDROM and also on the regularly updated Native Software web site.

From initial impressions, I think that if you really get into Dynamo V1.0 then you may well want to upgrade to Reaktor V2.3, otherwise most will be happy with the massive possibilities that Dynamo offers.

Dynamo can be used as a VST 2.0 plug-in, DirectConnect or stand-alone, using your soundcards MIDI interface.

Installation

The full install (recommended) requires 180Mb of your hard drive, 100Mb of which is a key file so you can run Dynamo V1.0 without the CD in your drive. This speeds up some operations so its the preferred mode of operation.

Copy protection rears its ugly head once again in the form of an occasional request to insert the original CD-ROM into your drive for verification. Not an unreasonable request but an inconvenience I could do well without. Copy protection has become more advanced so this sort of nonsense is no longer necessary. However, it could be worse, it could be a dongle.

System Requirements

As with all software synthersizers, the more processing power you have the better. You can run Dynamo V1.0 on a Pentium 266MHz machine, but you will manage more notes and simultaneous sounds with a faster one.

The minimum system requirements for the Mac are OS 8.0 or higher, 604e/250 MHz, and 64Mb RAM. For the PC you can use Windows 95/98/2000 or NT 4.0, with a minimum of a Pentium 266MHz and 64Mb RAM.

The choice of soundcard can be crucial to your long-term enjoyment, some offer low latency to give an almost instant keyboard response, while others can make playing software synthersizers from a keyboard feel right gooey. This depends largely on the soundcard driver design, and cant always be predicted.

Any Instrument can be used to try out Dynamo V1.0s real-time performance, optimise the Play Ahead setting for your particular soundcard by reducing the setting until you start to get audio clicks, and then edge it back up to the next higher setting.

My SoundBlaster Live worked on the lowest 10mS setting, and playing Dynamo V1.0 from a MIDI keyboard felt very responsive, but other cards may not prove so successful. However, NI also provide downloadable demo versions of their software, and apart from giving you a taster of the sounds on offer, these will also let you try out the products with your own soundcard to see how it performs.

What are the best ways to make money?

If you answered, a job, then you have been brainwashed like most Americans into believe that working for a company is the best way to make money. It is absolutely NOT one of the best ways to make money. Why not?

Most jobs have the following problems:

1. The time trap. You are trading your time for money. Even if you are a salaried employee, you are accepting a salary for a set number of hours that you will work each week. If you dont work, you dont get paid. Most companies want you to work the most amount of time for the least money and you want to work the least amount of time for the most money. The job game is a lose-lose game.

2. No passive income. If you stop working for any period of time, you stop receiving paychecks. Your money doesnt work for you.

3. No intellectual capital. If you are an employee, your company owns your intellectual capital. Its like your company owns your brain. You cannot sell or share your ideas and earn money.

4. No control. You have no control over your work life and therefore your life. You cannot choose where you work, when you work, or who you work with. Most companies require a lot of face time. Even if you could get your work done in 4 hours each day, you usually need to spend 8-10 hours onsite to prove that you are a loyal employee. You have no control over most of the decisions that are being made at your company. Bad decisions made by others could put your company out of business and then you get downsized or rightsized or simply laid-off.

5. No leverage. Entertainers and professional athletes make lots and lots of money because they have leverage. Millions of people watch them. They can make one movie or play one game a week and make buckets of money because they are reaching a huge audience with a few hours of their time. In a job, your efforts reach a limited audience. You cannot give a speech to your department and record it and then turn it into a teleclass that you sell over and over again on your website. You have no leverage.

So, what are some better ways to make money without going to a job?

1. Start a business. Yes, lots of businesses fail. But small businesses are the engine of growth in this country. It took Bill Gates 10 years to become a billionaire with Microsoft. It took Michael Dell 5 years to become a billionaire with Dell. What you need is a solid plan and then the courage to execute the plan and the discipline to market your products or services consistently. There has never been a better time to get rich by starting a company. What are your goals? When do you want to achieve those goals?

If you want to start a business quickly and dont have the necessary business fundamentals or want a pre-designed, proven system, then look into joining a network marketing company. If you can find a product you love, a company with a proven marketing system and a management with integrity, you can develop a great passive income stream.

Do your own research and see if it makes sense for you to start your company from ground zero or join a network marketing company. There are lots of good network marketing companies to choose from. (There are also lots that arent such good bets.)

2. Real Estate. Isnt this risky? There are no risky real estate investments, only risky investors. You can minimize risk through education and experience.

Dont you need money to get into real estate investing? For most commercial real estate deals, yes. But you can succeed with no-money down investing in the residential arena. In fact, it may be better to start out investing with no money of your own because you will only do great deals. You will not waste any of your money chasing marginal deals.

Land is in limited supply, especially near the oceans. Land will almost always increase in value. There may be some small corrections in the short term, but if you invest in the right areas, chances are they will appreciate. Plus, you can learn to make money in up and down markets.

3. Investing in other companies. Many people put their money in a mutual fund or index fun and are happy with 5-10% appreciation each year. But, there are other ways to invest. Investigate individual stocks. What products and services do you love so much that you tell other people about them? Remember, you make a profit when you buy not when you sell. It is impossible to know what the future holds. Do your homework. Find stocks that are bargains today.

4. Selling your intellectual capital. Another good way to make money is to develop products and services around your ideas. These could include books, tapes and CDs, workshops, videos, etc. This is a great way to create passive income streams.

My purpose here is not to give you a roadmap for becoming a CEO or a successful investor but to open your mind to the possibilities. There are so many great opportunities. If you are staying in a job that you hate because you think it is the best way to make money, then, think again.

Making vacation plans for Hawaii probably has you searching all your favorite stores for the best tropical inspired clothing of the season, however packing for a Hawaiian vacation requires more than simply picking out tropical themed clothing. In fact, to properly pack for Hawaii you need to consider not only the weather, but the activities you will be participating in while you are there. This is where pre-planning comes into the picture. If you pre-plan activities you will have a better idea of what your vacation will entail and what you should pack than if you wait and decide when you arrive in Hawaii. Deciding to plan activities when you arrive in the islands will mean that you will over-pack and have a difficult time managing your bags not to mention deciding what to wear because you have too many options. Plan ahead, and follow these tips for packing for Hawaii.

Make a List

You have heard time and time again that making a list is the most productive way to accomplish anything because you keep track of what you need done as well as what has been done. The same goes with packing for Hawaii. You may have saved past lists from other vacations, and this is great because you can review the list for items you will need to pack for Hawaii. For example, the toiletries, medicines, and personal care items you need will be the same for most all vacations, just make sure sunscreen makes it onto the list. Once you have those items taken care of, then you should consider what you will be doing in Hawaii. Since the majority of Hawaiis most amazing attractions from the beach to the gardens and canyons are outside, you will want to make sure you pack adequate comfortable clothing that will keep you cool in the warm climate, and that is also comfortable for walking, cycling and other physical activities.

Casual clothing like shorts, lightweight pants, skirts, tank tops, cotton polo shirts and the like are suitable for Hawaii because they are cool, comfortable and lightweight. Another tip for your clothing is to make sure it fits. If you pack ultra tight clothing or clothing that is simply too small you will be uncomfortable throughout the trip and if you sweat, which is very possible under the Hawaiian sun, you could end up with a bad rash. So, focus on comfortable, lightweight, fitting clothes for your daytime attire. If you plan on visiting the volcanoes or are cold natured you should include some light sweaters or jackets just in case it is cool.

You will also be visiting the beach, swimming pools, and waterfalls while you are in Hawaii, maybe even on a daily basis. Because of this, you also need to pack several bathing suits so that you can wash one a day and wear a different one. Nobody wants to wear wet bathing suits, or dirty bathing suits, so pack at least two. A cover up for women is essential as well, and men might choose to pack extra t-shirts if they need to cover up.

The sun is strong in Hawaii so be sure to pack several strengths of sunscreen even if you are planning on getting a great tan. The first few days apply a higher strength SPF and then after you have a base tan you can tone down the level of sunscreen you are using. The point of this is that if you avoid sunscreen you will more than likely get burned your first day out, which will ruin the rest of the week for tanning, be very painful, and negatively impact your vacation. By using sunscreen you will get a great tan, avoid the sunburn, and truly enjoy your Hawaiian vacation. Also, since the sun is bright you will want to make sure you pack sunglasses and a hat. Squinting is no way to enjoy your vacation, and a great pair of shades will help you relax and enjoy your beautiful Hawaiian vacation.

Consider the nightlife in Hawaii. Will you be attending a luau, an upscale restaurant, dances or parties? These are all considerations and will require different modes of dress. It is a lot easier to shop for your clothing before your vacation than spend precious vacation hours shopping in overpriced stores. If you need formal wear for several occasions, be sure to pack it properly to avoid wrinkles. You will be relieved to have just what you need to wear to every nightly function you attend. Remember, however, the islands are more laid back and the word formal is not taken in the same way as formal might be understood on the mainland. As a result, semi-formal will most likely work for the majority of Hawaiian events.

Shoes, what a difficult thing to pack! Everyone wants to pack a different pair of shoes for every outfit, and this simply will not work when trying to fill a small suitcase. As a result, choose one pair of shoes for water activities, one for athletic activities, and one or two for casual or dressed up activities. That way, you save space in your luggage and wont be overburdened with choices.

Jewelry is another topic that you should consider before traveling to Hawaii. Many activities on the islands will require you leave your jewelry in the hotel, and in fact the hot weather simply is not conducive to a lot of jewelry. In addition, when you wear fine jewelry you will make yourself a target for theft and will need to increase security options. As a result, decide on some basic pieces of jewelry that will flatter all of your clothing and travel with those. You will feel more secure knowing your jewelry is safe at home than locked in a hotel safe.

Remember, this is not a comprehensive list of things to pack, just some simple suggestions to keep in mind when you pull out your suitcases and start trying to fill them with your entire closet. Be conservative and keep in mind that most condos and hotels have laundry services in case you need to do a load of laundry on vacation. Also, you will want to make a comprehensive list before you begin packing and review it for things that are truly unnecessary. Then, begin packing and rest easy knowing you will pack everything you need, but not over pack for the first time in your life. You will really enjoy Hawaii when you have the right clothes for every occasion, but not so many that it is a burden traveling.

In this Trigeminal Neuralgia article series, we take a look at Trigeminal Neuralgia, its symptoms, diagnosis and treatment.

Trigeminal Neuralgia is also called Tic Douloureux, which is French for painful tic. It is characterized by facial pain which may occur upon eating, shaving or touching. This disease is not common. It occurs in 150 per million people per year and usually occurs in patients over 50 years of age.

Trigeminal Neuralgia is a disorder of the Trigeminal Cranial Nerve. We have twelve pairs of cranial nerves on either side of the head. The Trigeminal nerve is the fifth cranial nerve. The Trigeminal nerve has three branches:

V1 (Ophthalmic) affects the eye, forehead and nose
V2 (Maxillary) affects the upper teeth, gum and lip, the cheek, lower eyelid and the side of the nose.
V3 ((Mandibular) affects lower teeth, gum, lower lip and jaw.

Symptoms usually occur on one side of the face and can range from sudden, sharp, electrical or throbbing pain and can occur throughout the day.

What causes Trigeminal Neuralgia? Theories abound, but it is commonly believed to stem from compression of the Trigeminal nerve, due to a blood vessel pressing on the nerve, tumors in the skull, or multiple sclerosis.

Many people go undiagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia because symptoms mimic other conditions such as dental problems and migraines.

In our next series, we take a look at how Trigeminal Neuralgia is diagnosed as well as conventional medical treatment.
