There are many different reasons for purchasing multiple domain names, and each reason has its own set of benefits and uses.

Ive written quite extensively before about how to select the best domain name for your business. It is also a good idea to secure alternate versions of your primary domain name as a means to prevent competitors from trying to squeeze in on your name and branding efforts. Buying multiple domain names is a great strategy that can be used to capture additional type-in traffic, secure other branding avenues you may wish to pursue, or simply to prevent your competitors from securing them.

Type-In Traffic

Many URLs are purchased simply to capture type in traffic. Type-in traffic is when someone goes to the address bar of their web browser and types in keywords.com instead of performing a keyword search on a search engine. Securing domain names with a fair amount of type-in traffic can be a great boost to sales. If you sell bean bags, your main URL might be BarrysBeanBags.com. To capture potential type-in traffic you might also secure and redirect the following:

• KidsBeanBags .com
• BeanBagChairs .com
• BeanBagFurnture .com

Misspellings

It is always a good idea to secure potential misspellings of your domain name. I recently did a radio interview and at the end of the interview I provided my domain name. Unfortunately I did not take the time to actually spell it out. Upon realizing my error, I immediately went out and purchased multiple spellings of my URL to redirect to my main site.

• PolPositionMarketing .com
• PullPositionMarketing .com
• PollPositionMarketing .com

This allowed me to capture all traffic from any listeners that may have had a different spelling of my site in mind, which increased my visitor rate from those who listened to the broadcast substantially.

Along with misspellings you should also consider purchasing plural and/or singular versions of your domain.

YourDomainSucks .com

If you are in a highly visible industry you might want to consider getting yourdomainsucks.com. Several years ago someone put up an anti AOL website at aolsucks.com (You can see a version of this at http://web.archive.org/web/19980111060209/http://www.aolsucks.com/).

Who might do such a thing? A disgruntled x-employee, a customer who had a bad experience or even a former spouse or partner. Setting up and hosting a website is relatively easy, and often bad press travels a lot further with a little effort than good press with a lot of effort.

There are some significant drawbacks from trying to capture all negative versions of your domain name. Youll have to grab all hyphenated, non-hyphenated, plural, and misspelled variations. That can be quite a bit. Take that even a step further, youll want to buy the .net, .org, .info, .biz and .us (or your country code) variations. Dont forget YourDomainSux.com or YourDomainReallySucks either.

Is it worth trying to get all those variations? Youll have to decide. For some any press is good press. For others, not so much. In any case, someone registering a sucks version of your domain name is likely to create a legal battle that perhaps neither side wants to engage in.

Hyphenated Versions

I mentioned above that you should not purchase a hyphenated URL for your main site. For marketing purposes, however, there are sometimes legitimate reasons to do so. My business owns PolePositionMarketing.com and Pole-Position-Marketing.com. I purchased the hyphenated version simply to prevent a competitor from securing it and stealing my branding. I also have the option of using the hyphenated versions for other marketing efforts, but I dont recommend doing so unless you are fully aware of the potential ramifications.

Use Proper Redirects

When setting up multiple domains such as those mentioned above, its important that you set up each one properly. Setting up domains improperly can lead to duplicate site/content penalties on the search engines which will ultimately be bad for business.

The best method of setting up multiple URLs is to set up a 301 permanent redirect. The 301 redirect tells the search engine that the URL it is trying to access has been permanently moved to a new location, presumably your main URL. The cool thing is that when a visitor types in the redirecting URL they are automatically flipped to your main site.

Many websites employ on-page JavaScript or meta refresh redirects, or even worse, framed pages pulling in the main site. These methods are effective from the user standpoint but not from the search engine standpoint. The 301 redirect is generally the safest method of redirecting users.

To set-up a 301 redirect youll want to talk with your web host, as different servers require different methods if implementation. When redirecting multiple URLs there is a neat little trick that saves hosting fees that youll want to use.

1. Take one of the redirecting URLs and host it on the cheap. This is the URL that will be set up with the 301 redirect to your main URL.
2. Take all your other URLs and park them to point to the URL above.

With this method, you pay for only one additional hosting account ($5 at the most) and all your URLs will automatically flip the visitor and the search engines to your main URL.

In marketing, every little bit can help. Even if a redirected domain name only results in one additional sale every few months, it may not be long until that one sale is a significant one. Whenever you think of a possible domain name that might be used to drive traffic away from your site, go grab it right away. If the domain is already purchased I recommend keeping an eye on it in case the owner forgets to renew it, in which case you can buy and hold on to it for your own benefit.

Did you know theres a little known loophole in US law that allows anyone to distribute, resell or give away expired copyrighted content? Officially, its called public domain, and savvy marketers borrow it to publish instant products.

Public domain refers to anything that is NOT protected under US copyright law. This includes all works published before 1923 and under certain conditions, works published up to 1978. Model 1: Resell It.
You can re-publish public domain content exactly as it is. Whether its a book, a movie or even music, you can take this content and quickly turn it into a product. Just copy it as it is and start selling it.

Model 2: Website Content
You can take the text of the public domain work which relates to a product you are selling or an affiliate program that you are promoting. You then create web pages and include links back to your product page.

Model 3: Repackage
You can repackage a public domain work into a new product. You can use the ideas and some of the content of public domain works to create new and better products.

Eg. Walt Disney characters Snow White, the Little Mermaid were all stories from the public domain.

Model 4: Multimedia
You can change the books in print into a CD or even a video set. Add to the perceived value of the product by offering ways to consume the information. What was once simply a book can now be a complete home study course or training program.

Eg. The famous Think & Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill has been made into an audio CD which is a more convenient format.

Model 5: Reprint Rights
You could sell your version of the information product along with marketing materials. People love reprint rights and its a quick and easy way to make tons of money immediately. You can sell reprint rights only to a derivative product you have created from the original public domain material.

Model 6: Upsell
You can use public domain works and use then as an upsell to a regular version of your best selling product. You simply present your buyer with an additional opportunity to upgrade their order or add something to their order.

Model 7: Bonuses
Simply use the work as a bonus to your main offering. People love bonuses and will buy a product just for the bonus, if its unique and not something theyve seen all over the net already.

Model 8: Viral E-books
You simply take parts of the book and turn it into a viral e-book by allowing others to pass along or even sell this e-book as their own. Once you trigger the virus its nearly impossible to make it stop because people keep passing it on and than these people keep passing it on etc, etc.

There are also sites on the internet, such as NameBoy, that suggest domain names from keywords that you provide. For example, enter fly as the first word and fishing as the second and it produces a list of combinations of these words and synonyms of each, including hyphenations. It also lets you know if the domains are available or taken. These sites are very useful if you have spent ages trying different names but have failed to come up with anything.

If possible, your domain name should have the main keyword of your site included in it. That is why fishing-with-flies is better than a domain without fishing and flies in the name. Google will regards flies as being the same as fly, so that anybody searching for fly fishing has a good chance of finding your site, assuming it is otherwise well optimized for search engines. The name of your web site should be associated with its domain name, and your domain name should contain one or more of the keywords for the site.

The TDL (top level domain) can also be important. Thats the part after the dot: in .com, com is the TDL. The best TDL for any domain name is .com however if that has been taken you might want to consider another. Keep in mind if you do so, however, that most people automatically type in .com when they are seeking a specific domain. A .com close to your ideal is likely to be better than a .info that has your domain exactly.

Top-level domain names or TLDs are the suffixes of Internet domain names. They consist of the letters, which are after the last dot of a name. For instance, with the domain name www., the TLD is “com”.

Basically, top-level domains are of three types. The first are the country code top-level domain names or ccTLDs. These are used by dependent territories or countries. They are usually made up of two letters such as .uk for the United Kingdom or .us for The United States.

The next type would be the generic top-level domains or gTLDs. These are used by a specific class or a specific organization. They are usually made up of three or more letters. A lot of gTLDs are available worldwide, however the .mil for military and the .gov for governmental could only be used by the respective authorities. These gTLDs are also classified to sTLDs or sponsored top-level domains like .coop and .aero; and uTLDs or unsponsored top-level domain names like .info and .pro.

The third type would be the infrastructure top-level domains or iTLDs.

There are also some TLDs that are no longer used are considered historical. One of which is .nato. This TLD was created by the NIC or National Informatics Center in the late 1980s to be used by NATO or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, as they did not feel that were any existing TLDs at that time that was able to show their international organization status. After it was, however, the TLD .int was created by NIC, which could specifically be used by international organizations. NATO was then convinced to use nato.int as their TLD. The .nato TLD was eventually deleted in July 1996.

Some other TLDs which are no longer used are .zr for Zaire, .cz for Czechoslovakia and .oz for Australia.
