Learning to Memorize Piano Music

We all have our psychological, emotional, mental and physical barriers when it comes to practicing and/or performing. One such particularly difficult challenge is that many pianists simply cannot remember a piece. However, it is the emotional reaction to not remembering a piece which is the most painful. In fact, what it creates is stress. And, that is a huge problem and very difficult barrier that pianists need to overcome.

Knowing what stress is however can completely change your perspective. Heres the real definition of stress;

Stress is the amount of energy you put into resisting your situation.

This will help to change your behavior and therefore, if you change your behavior, you change the results. The first step is to become aware of your internal dialogue when you approach the piano. What is your little voice telling you? Is it saying, I feel guilty for not doing what is expected of me? Is it saying, Im not good enough, talented enough, smart enough, disciplined enough?

What you focus on expands. If you focus on what you cannot do or are not able to do, that will expand. If you focus on what you can do, that will expand as well.

When you are sitting at the piano, your thoughts become reality. Your thoughts instantly take form as you are creating. Your barrier may be that you are focused on what once was, instead of focusing on the now! If all you do is focus on the fact that it was once easy for you to memorize, you are not focusing on the now. Present moment awareness is the key to learning to play the piano or any other instrument. It is also the key to learning anything in life thats worthwhile learning.

The next time you practice just sit at the piano and meditate on what you are feeling. Dont play, just feel. Does it feel stressful, joyful or painful? Are you anticipating stress or anticipating pain? Are you looking forward to playing or are you hearing little scripts in your head saying you used to be great, now your not, you are not this, that, etc? What are you feeling?

The next day, sit at the piano again and turn your attention to the now. Feel the joy of playing. Feel the joy of what it is to make beautiful sounds. Just let your hands explore over the keys, and listen to every note like it was the most beautiful sound you ever made! You are in the now! No one can steal this moment and pure joy from you. Feel the joy and the freedom in the now.

Once you have gone through this little exercise, and you are in the now, and every note becomes beautifuleven wrong notes. Now, in the present moment, without any negative thoughts to the contrary, you are ready to learn one thing at a time.

I teach the 10-24-7 Paul Tobey method! This means that you learn one thing at a time with 100% of your energy, learn it again in 24 hours and again in 7 days. Your retention rate for this one thing will go up 85%.

Theres a term we use for this type of learning and its called accelerated learning techniques or advanced learning techniques. Its what I teach in my seminars because its what works best for me and for the hundreds of people Ive taught it to.

Your barriers are not in the brain. Its not a malfunction of your intellectual or physical ability. Your barriers (self-perceived limitations) are our little voices that constantly speak to us from deep within in our brains. You can eliminate it but, first you must understand it. You must stop feeling like a victim. You must stop focusing on the past (who you were), and start focusing on who you are (in the now). Your passion for the piano is evident. Your passion is living in the now.

The question is, how long is your past going to control your present? If want to experience freedom at the piano, all you have to do is sit on the bench, let your hands feel the notes, and listen to every note like it was the best note you ever played. Then, without judging yourself, or any note you play, just learn one thing in the now. Do it again in 24 hours, and again in 7 days.

Remember, dont judge what you can or cannot do. Just feel, and be aware of the little voice inside your mind. And when it says to you I cant memorize this piece, just say to your mind thanks for sharing, and go right back to the joy of playing.

Paul Tobey has recorded several CDs and performed piano concerts all over the world. He is considered unique among pianists because of his individual style and composing abilities.

Guitar Membership Websites And The Danger Of The Entitlement Mindset

The entitlement mindset. This is possibly one of the largest roadblocks that can hold you back from guitar learning success. Unfortunately many guitarists have this mindset. And its robbing from them any possible chance of reaching high levels of guitar playing. So what on earth is this mindset? And what on earth does it have to do with guitar membership websites! All is revealed below

Recently I launched a guitar membership website. This is a website where I teach people the exact system that I use for mastering guitar scales and guitar modes. I take them by the hand and show them exactly how I do it. It took me hundreds of hours to create and it definitely cost me quite a few dollars to set up. And heres the really scary thing

Just after the launch I got an email from a guy saying something like Im not in the habit of paying to join websites. Now thats fine with meI didnt expect everyone on my email list to join. But lets take a closer look at this

Why does this guy think he should gain access to the guitar membership website for free? Why does he expect me to hand him my hard-earned guitar scale learning methods that took many years to develop for free? Why does he think he is entitled to this high-quality information for free?

The answer to these questions is simple. Its the entitlement mindset! He expects something for nothing. He wants to get something without giving something in return. In this case a few bucks.

This is a very dangerous mindset to have. In fact, if someone has the entitlement mindset chances are they will never become a guitarist who plays at a professional level.

Lets now take a look at two areas where the entitlement mindsets holds guitar players back

1. Guitar practice.

If a guitarist has the entitlement mindset they expect to progress without putting in the required practice time. They often admire guitar virtuosos and on some level expect to play like their heroeswithout having to do huge amounts of practice. Because of this unwillingness to put in the needed effort they will NEVER play like the people they admire.

2. Information.

The best guitarists that I know have often invested large amounts of money to learn their craft. They
buy books, DVDs, CDs and other resources that they think will help them learn. They may also pay good money to go to the best guitar tutors or music schools that they can afford. The guitarist with the entitlement mindset has an unwillingness to spend money on the best information. They try to make do with free information. Ironically, they pay for free information with their time by spending countless hours looking for it!

At this point a guitarist with an entitlement mentality will say something like why should I pay for information when its all out there for free? I respond to this question by asking them this

If you were dying, would you be willing to get heart surgery from doctors who had taught themselves from free information available online? If the answer is nowhy wouldnt you?

OKits a bit of a silly example. No one in his or her right mind would do this! It would be a matter of life and death. But isnt your guitar progress really important too? And wouldnt inaccurate information, written by people who arent professional guitar tutors, slow down your progress? Its definitely something worth thinking about.

Did you know that close to 97.3% of guitarists dont use a step-by-step blueprint for learning guitar modes? If you would like to be one of the few who do, then please go to:

Recording a Music Project on a Budget

In most cases, trying to record your own music project comes down to 2 things: education and money. Anybody will tell you that the more education you have, the less money you need.

Learning what to do FIRST will save you a lot of money when you start doing it. With todays technology (internet, computers, software, etc.) you can sit at your PC, get an education, and make an informed decision on a course of action.

As the summary states, it IS possible to get into the recording studio and complete you Rap or Singing project, AND be confident that you know what you’re doing.

Do You Have What it Takes?

The fact that you arrived here shows that you do in fact have the ability to search for the knowledge needed to accomplish your task. It also shows that you believe you are (or can be) an artist, or can learn what you need to record someone who is. What Ive just described is motivation, and if you have it, then you have what it takes.

Is this REALLY Possible to Accomplish?

Again, if you have what it takes, are disciplined and focused, its quite possible. In fact, Ive taught these steps to many people, young and old, who have even recorded complete multiple-song projects using this info. A few have even done it for less than a couple hundred bucks.

There are no secrets to this; just information and education.

Are You Ready?

If you follow the instructions that are laid out in this program from start to finish, you can have a CD master completed in 4 to 6 weeks. Depending on the complexity of your song, it could take a little longer. However, a shorter period of time is not recommended; you dont your project to sound like it was rushed. The more rehearsal and practice you have, the more comfortable and focused you will be on recording day.

You will not need to have all your money in-place at the start, but you will definitely need a solid plan of how youll get it as you need it.

Youll likely start with a small amount to pay for your music, a small up-front cash deposit to secure your studio time, and the rest at the end of the recording session, when your master CD is finished.

J A Moore is a recording studio veteran of over 25 years, and the creator of ‘The $199.00 Music Project’, which is a free and informative webcourse that shows aspiring artists and producers how to begin recording their own recording projects independently.

Piano Chords For New Age Piano

If you like the beautiful sound of New Age piano you’re going to love this.

Listen most of you know what triads are. These 3 note chords have been the essential building blocks of western music for at least 4 centuries.

One thing about them though. They’re outdated!

Of course they’re still used. But there’s absolutely no need to start with them. Instead, why not begin your study of piano chords with something called the “open position” chord.

This chord structure gives you the freedom to play with both hands together right away! Plus, it’s a modern sounding chord.

The thing that frustrates more students than anything is what they’re playing. Usually constrained to ancient textbooks that teach triads and scales, the hapless newbie plunges ahead in the hopes of eventually playing the piano. The catch here is two fold. First when you do eventually get to play music, it’s that of other composers.

Sure the music is good. There’s no denying that. But it’s not modern. And it’s not your creation. Secondly, if you follow these textbooks, all you’ll be able to do is read music. You won’t be able to create it on your own.

With the open position chord, you can begin creating your own unique music right away. Take the lesson “Reflections in Water” for example.

Here we have 4 open position piano chords along with the order in which they are to played. Once you familiarize yourself with this chord position and get it under your fingers you’re ready to explore! These modern piano chords are perfect for the light, airy New Age piano style and will have you playing the piano in no time at all!

Edward Weiss is a pianist/composer and webmaster of Quiescence Music’s online piano lessons. He has been helping students learn how to play piano in the New Age style for over 14 years and works with students in private, in groups, and now over the internet. Show Off Your Piano Skills

Showing off your piano skills is not a tough job, but is not that easy either. Most people learn piano playing by playing just the written music- playing the exact notation. This leaves little room for creativity, and, therefore, little room to show off, right?

To show off your amateur skills, instead of following the harmony note by note, follow the chord symbols written above the harmonies, bridging the gaps with whatever you desire. Playing by the chord leaves room for experimentation, the freedom to create, to invent. In other words, to show off your amateur skills. This, however, does not mean that playing by written music is less important. It is a valuable skill indeed.

The first of the chord symbols, the root, tells which note is the root of the chord. Exempli gratia, in a C7 chord, C is the root. Piece of cake, this.

Quality, second part in chord symbolization, denotes whether a chord is major, minor, diminished or augmented. In Emaj7, the maj tells that E is major. Similarly, maj can be replaced with aug, min, dim.

The extension in the symbol, written after quality, reveals if the chord varies from a triad, such as an 11th or 6th or 7th or 13th. A C6 would mean that chord C includes the 6th note above C, which is A. if such notation is not shown; it is to be assumed that the chord is a triad.

Alteration, the last part in chord symbolization, is usually expressed. It gives the musician specific instructions for playing the chord and is written in parenthesis after the extension or the quality, if no extension exists. (No seventh) would tell the pianist to leave the seventh tone alone. Sus – for suspension, would require playing the fourth note instead of the usual third. Minus sign indicates lowering (flattening) of a chord tone, a plus would imply a raise (sharpening) a tone. Example, D+7 would mean to raise the 7th of the chord.

Once you see through these intricacies, you will be reading only a handful of notes per measure, but you will be playing a lot of notes – arpeggios, chords, riffs, fills, etc. you can then add a personal touch to the music, and play your song how you want to play it, not like everybody else is. A great way to show off your amateur skills!

Whether performing for friends, family, work colleagues or complete strangers, the fear of making a complete ass of yourself can haunt us all...

Piano Playing Secrets Of The Pros

It’s no secret that professional piano players use techniques that amateur piano players don’t. So what else is new? Professional golfers use techniques that amateur golfers don’t use (at least not very well), and pro ball players use techniques that sandlot and weekend athletes don’t use — or again, not very well.

So it’s not surprising that professional piano players have some tricks up their sleeves that the rest of us mortals don’t have. But that doesn’t mean we can’t try to emulate the great pianists. We may not pull it off as well as them, but we sure can have a lot of fun trying, and who knows? Maybe a few of us can actually learn these techniques well enough to win some admiration from our friends, join a group, play for our own enjoyment, or whatever.

Here is a list of just a few of the technique the pros use when they play piano. There are more, of course, but this is a pretty good estimate of the most important skills:
Pro Secret 1: Straddles. Leaving one of more notes out of a chord to create an open feeling.
Pro Secret 2: 2/1 & 3/1 Breakups. Breaking a chord up by playing part of the chord & then the rest of the chord.
Pro Secret 3: Waterfall Chords. Broken chords cascading down from the top of the keyboard similar to a waterfall.
Pro Secret 4: Tremolo-Fired Runs. Rapid-fire runs made of chords, but starting with a tremolo.
Pro Secret 5: Half-Step Slides. Approaching the next chord from 1/2 step above or below.
Pro Secret 6: Suspensions. Using the 4th as a “hangover” instead of the 3rd.
Pro Secret 7: Chord Substitutions. Harmonizing songs using different chords than the traditional ones.
Pro Secret 8: Voicing in 4ths. Stacking chords in intervals of 4ths instead of 3rds.
Pro Secret 9: Turn-Arounds. A chord progression that turns you around, like a cul-de-sac.
Pro Secret 10: Introductions. Creating a front door for the song.
Pro Secret 11: Endings. Creating a back door for the song.
Pro Secret 12: Transposing. Playing a song in a key different than it was written in.
Pro Secret 13: Modulating. Getting from key to key smoothly.
Pro Secret 14: Altering a Melody to Create a New Melody. Using neighboring tones to craft a new tune.
Pro Secret 15: Inversions. Instead of always playing chords in root position, using a variety of “upside down” chords.
Pro Secret 16: Creating Original Chord Progressions. Linking chords together creatively.
Pro Secret 17: Echoes - Rhythmic, Melodic, Harmonic. The easiest way to begin the arranging process.
Pro Secret 18: Touch. The difference between a sledge hammer and a pillow.
Pro Secret 19: II7 to V7 Progression. One of the most common chord progressions.
Pro Secret 20: Latin-American Rhythms. Using various rhythm patterns such as Samba, Bossa Nova, Cha Cha, etc.
Pro Secret 21: Locked Hands Style. Playing the melody in both hands with a chord under the right hand melody.
Pro Secret 22: Jazz Styles. Lush, offset beats, comping, color tones, etc.
Pro Secret 23: Two-Handed Arps. The Flowing River Of Sound. Using broken chords in both hands at the same time.
Pro Secret 24: Parallelisms. Parts moving the same direction (such as 10ths, octaves, etc.)
Pro Secret 25: Ragtime Techniques. Barrel-house and early jazz styles.
Pro Secret 26: Polytonality & Superimposition. Playing in two keys at the same time, and playing two different chords at the same time.
Pro Secret 27: Delay-Catch-Up Technique. Falling behind the beat, then catching up.
Pro Secret 28: Slash Chords. Chords over a left-hand counter melody.
Pro Secret 29: Counter-Melodies. Creating a sub-tune that is complimentary to the main tune.
Pro Secret 30: Western Sounds. Wagon-wheel bass styles, etc.
Pro Secret 31: Gospel Sounds. “Get on that church” and “shouting” styles.
Pro Secret 32: 12 Bar Blues. The basis for thousands of songs in all styles.
Pro Secret 33: Passing Tones. Tones that “pass through” the current chord.
Pro Secret 34: Question-Answer Techniques. Repeating a previous musical phrase but in a new way.
Pro Secret 35: Far-Out Harmonies. Extended chords, altered chords.
Pro Secret 36: Syncopation. Playing between the beats.

There are other techniques the pros use, and new techniques are always being invented. But for a list of worthy goals for an aspiring piano player, this list will keep us busy for a long time.

John Mellencamp "Freedoms Road" CD Review

Freedoms Road is the latest release from Pop Artist John Mellencamp, and I can only think of one word to describe it… AWESOME!

I wish it weren’t the case but, it’s not everyday that I get a CD from an artist that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just can’t force myself to get through. Not at all the case with Freedoms Road. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

Freedoms Road has a nicely varied, mix of 10 tracks that are very well written songs by this clearly superb artist. With many of the songs displaying a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Clearly drawing from what I can only imagine are his own real life experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions of love, heartbreak, pain, failed relationships and unattainable romance. They’re all here.

The nice thing about a CD like this is when the talent is this rich even if Pop isn’t your favorite style you still can’t help but appreciate the greatness of the artist.

Overall Freedoms Road is an outstanding release. I give it my double thumbs up. You will not be disappointed with one single track.

My SmoothLee Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 4, Forgiveness. It’s a great track!
