Keekorok Safari Lodge-Masai mara Kenya
Dating from 1965, Keekorok lodge is a large and busy lodge located at the well-traveled crossroads within the Masai Mara national reserve. It can accommodate almost 200 guests including many minibus tour groups. Keekorok is popular among those who prefer solid walls to tents and for its location. It is one of the easier Mara lodges to reach from Nairobi by road. The lodge is sited on a shallow rise where you can see for miles, and the sky stretches-beyond the horizon-to infinity.
With white washed walls in clean contrast to high-peaked black roof lines, the lodge is laid out to give all main rooms and most guest rooms a wide open view of the Mara. The main hotel building is usually a hive of activity there are notice boards announcing activities, a lecture room, a busy gift shop and a comfortable lounge surprising in leather and tartan. The dining room is open to the terrace-allowing for fresh breezes and that view. The large stone terrace has heavy wooden chairs and tables, and overlooks mowed lawns and a swimming pool made private by bougainvillea bushes. Below are thee tall trees and lush growth at the edge of the Poloret River. Beyond all of this stretches the golden vastness of the Masai Mara plains.
Keekorok, which means place of black trees in the Maasai language, is named for the trees at the rivers edge. A high wooden walkway has been built here, and allows close up views of the plants, trees, birds and other wildlife that live along the river. At one end, a small thatched sundowner bar overlooks a river pool with resident hippo. There are no fences around Keekorok, and it is not uncommon to see elephant and buffalo wander on to the perimeters of the grounds-always under the watchful eyes of the askari on guard.
Accommodation in Keekorok lodge
Although Keeekorok has over 70 rooms, the different wings have been laid out to minimize a sense of crowding. Rooms are simply but nicely furnished, most with tub and shower. Some have double beds and minibar. Many rooms have views of the Mara, and from most new wing rooms and the VIP House, there are even opportunities for early morning game viewing while lying in bed or from your private terrace.
Special facilities at the Keekorok masai mara lodge
Game drives ,early morning ballooning(by arrangement), Masai dancing, naturalist slides, lectures on Masai culture, pool, video room, conference room, souvenir shop, air strip, petrol station. If you fancy nothing less than solid walls in national parks and reserves, the Keekorok is the lodge you want to stay in. Vans from Nairobi reach it faster than other lodges and it is also within a few minutes from your farthest game drive in the park. It as such reduces the all too common safari fatigue that accumulates fast from riding in a touristy mini van on poor terrain. One other advantage of the Keekorok is that is less than 10 minutes from the airstrip and the balloon launching area. The lodge is so centrally placed that everything is within reach.
